Chapter 1

Max felt the anger prickle under her skin hot and sharp. The pavement pounded away beneath her feet, the streets left behind her at a pace quicker than her racing heartbeat. She was almost running.

Get out of my house!

Her eyes were near blind with tears that fell unabashedly down her cheeks. She scarcely noticed them. Her mind was filled with a deep, red fog that pulsed through her veins. How dare he. How could he?

Hayden isn’t going anywhere. Get out!

Max had long since given up expecting her father to be anything less than the scumbag he was. But she never thought he would ever pull her and her brother, Hayden, apart. She should have. It wasn’t exactly out of character for him. But still, she seethed with impassioned hatred for the man that had been making her life hell on earth for as long as she could remember.

Hayden sit down! You’re not leaving with her.

She wanted to scream. Since the moment she’d turned 18, she’d worked just to get out from under him. Just to have a normal life. But Hayden was still there. Four years younger and trapped with a dad that wasn’t too shy to slap, shout, and kick out at anything within reach. Max had promised him. Vowed to him that she’d get him out. Get him somewhere safer.

If I ever see you near this house again, I’ll call the police. You got that?

But, of course, it was never that simple. Nothing was simple with their father. All she wanted was for Hayden to be safe. That was it. And now even just seeing him would be almost impossible. Hayden was too scared of their father to stand up to him. And with good reason. That was what Max was for, she was the one that wasn’t afraid to take the hit if it meant that Hayden was that little bit safer. This time though it had gone too far and she’d ruined any chance of him finishing high school in peace.

Get out. Get out! Get out!

Max ducked into an alleyway, out of view. It was too much. The anger was overwhelming her completely and she was started to hyperventilate. The last thing she needed was some concerned citizen getting involved. That never ended well.

God, she felt like she wanted to rip her skin from her bones. The rage was building into a blinding heat that tore through her blood like wildfire. All she could see was her father’s red, screaming face swimming around her mind. She felt some kind of sound rumble from her throat. She couldn’t stop it. She needed to hit something. She wanted to hit him. Bare knuckles right square into his face.

The rage built and built. She couldn’t breathe. Her lungs felt ragged and hot like she’d been breathing in ash. It was too much. Too much. Too much. Crack!

The haze parted for just a moment. Her fist had hit a wall in the alley. Orange brick dust drifted around her wrist.
